The History
The history of Harley-Davidson® Sportster® motorcycles dates to the late 1950s when the first model hit the market. These models were lightweight, agile, and designed to offer riders high-speed performance. The ability to conquer the road with a speed of up to 100 miles per hour was one of its kind, and it quickly became a favorite among both novice and experienced riders.
The initial models featured the unique Ironhead 900cc V-twin engine, which marked the brand’s foray into high-performance HOV engines. Later, they also added a 1000cc option for more power and performance. The rear suspension on these bikes ensured a more comfortable ride, and the visually stunning, sport-inspired styling made sure these motorcycles turned heads wherever they went.
Evolution of the Harley-Davidson® Sportster® Motorcycle
Over the next few decades, Harley-Davidson added various improvements to these motorcycle models—extra weight to the original frame and electric speedometers, among others, are two to name.
We have highlighted a few more changes below.
As you may know, the original engine dominated the motorcycle market for over three decades since its release. However, in 1986, Harley-Davidson replaced it with the Evolution® V-twin engine, another iconic model from the brand. Although this engine is still in production, it now comes in both 883cc and 1200cc varieties.
Before this, in 1975, the gear shift placement was moved to the left side to meet the U.S. Department of Transportation-standardized regulations for gear placement. In 1991, Harley-Davidson replaced the original four-speed transmission with a five-speed version, and they later replaced the chain-drive systems with a belt-drive model. The company also standardized the clutch and oil tank for more consistent performances.
