History of the Harley-Davidson® Softail® Motorcycle

The design process started much earlier; in the 1970s, an engineer named Bill Davis invented the design in his home garage. Instead of a traditional frame, he invented a unique swingarm with a cantilevered shape. The Harley-Davidson company bought Davis' designs and patents a few years later.
